Editorial – Issue 8

Much to the woe of students and even more so, teachers, June holiday is coming to an end. The busiest term of the year is about to kick in while new threats of Deltacron and (hopefully not) monkeypox looms. But fret not! Because there are many many exciting comics events lined up to ease your minds off the impending sense of doom:

With the Comic Embassy now established at the basement of Tekka Mall, you’ll never have to hunt all over Singapore’s dwindling bookstores to purchase local comics. Not only will you find popular titles in the retail-cum-exhibition space, there are also many indie comic books on the shelves, which could only be purchased during comic-conventions in the past. On top of that, the space offers an array of public activities such as exhibitions, demonstrations, talks and workshops conducted by local comic artists. Check out Red Dot Diva’s video tour of the space:

Each month, the embassy will focus on a pair of artists whose works will be highlighted in the exhibition space. The public can also meet and greet them, grab their books and autograph, and even attend workshops conducted by these masters. This July, the annual Singapore Original Comics Festival (SGOCF) returns in its seventh iteration, with an art exhibition at Jurong Regional Library from 1st to 30th July, and a series of online workshops conducted by Pura Comixmag featured artists. More updates will be announced in the official website and social media pages: https://sgocf.com/

If you’re up for some last minute weekend trips, Goodman Arts Centre is having their Open House this coming Saturday, 25 June where curious members of the public can drop in and satisfy their voyeuristic cravings of how artists work in their studios, or participate in many free and ticketed events. https://goodmanartscentre.sg/open-house-2022. During this open house, Association of Comic Artist (ACAS) is having their June 2022 Comics Mini-con where there will be books, merch and artworks for sale, plus and a couple of talks, workshops, caricature sessions and cosplay events at Blk B, #02-02. Check out their instagram for the programmes: https://www.instagram.com/acascomics/. ComXnaut Studio https://www.comxnaut.com/ is also having their open studio at Blk B #05-11 where you can find out more about their courses and purchase comic books at their in-house comic store.

Lastly, if you have yet to visit the Attack On Titan exhibition at Art Science Museum, it is still going on till 9 August. https://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/exhibitions/attack-on-titan.html
