Talk by Joshua Chiang – From Ronin To Detective

In this talk, Joshua Chiang will share about Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat, a five-issue mini-series, which he completed in 2020, and his next graphic novel, The Five-foot-way Detective, which is funded by the National Arts Council.

 

Bio:

Joshua Chiang is a self-taught illustrator/comic-artist/animator and also the founder of Cerealbox Studios (www.cerealboxstudios.com).

His first illustrated children’s book, Monsters Under The Wall was published in early 2009 by Ethos Books.

His next book, Trackless Paths a collection of illustrations inspired by the sayings of wise people throughout the ages was published in 2013 to be followed in the same year by an interactive app/ebook: The Chronicles of Oujo Book 1: Questalon.

In 2020, he completed an original five-book comic miniseries Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat which was published by Page to Print Pte Ltd under the imprint Wiplash. He is currently working on his next graphic novel The Five-foot-way Detective, which is being funded by the National Arts Council.

He has illustrated books for many authors, including award-winner Adeline Foo, and well as Ghanian writer Abyna Ansaa. He is also a regular illustrator for many Ministry of Education preschool books. He has also created comics for many Singapore organizations such as Singapore Power, Kaplan Singapore and Families For Life (formerly National Family Council).

Joshua has been based in Phnom Penh Cambodia since 2013 where he is best known for his popular Candid Cambodia series of art prints. You can find this series, plus other merchandises created by him at www.cerealboxshop.com .

Having worked in Mediacorp, co-directed an independent film (S11), and then in the budding Singapore animation industry in the 2000s, Joshua’s flair for visual storytelling also extends into the animation projects he is commissioned to do. He has directed two animated music videos for Singapore composer Peng Chi Sheng, as well as several animated infographics videos for international NGOs such as Frontiers Broker Network , Frontiers Lab Asia and People In Need (Cambodia).
